How To Use And General Information

(The following was taken straight from the Wizards site.)

    How To Scan Your Cards
Make sure the bar code is facing down and toward the screen.
Swipe the card smoothly in the direction the arrow is pointing. Keep the card edge flat against The PlayGrid.

On each down, you'll both swipe your plays, and then you'll swipe the player it asks you for. If it says "ERROR!" when you swipe a card, try swiping it faster. If it says a player is illegal, make sure the player is from the right position. The #1 player at a position is the one with the highest point value.
For most purposes, it isn't necessary to know the details of how The PlayGrid works. The plays tell The PlayGrid who the key players might be, and it rolls some dice to see who actually gets used that down. The players tell The PlayGrid what their stats are, and it uses those numbers plus some more dice-rolling to see who wins the matchup. Three major factors affect the players' totals when deciding who won the matchup:
    1. Whether the defense guessed right affects both players' totals.
    2. The PlayGrid will focus on certain stats depending on the positions matched up. For example, quarterback vs. cornerback will focus on Accuracy/Coverage or Range/Speed.
    3. High-risk plays like blitzes and bombs can give a bonus to the defending player, but double the yardage if the offense wins.
Once The PlayGrid knows who won, it rolls dice again to get the final result. The more your player won by, the more likely you'll get a blowout result like a 30-yard gain or a chance for turnovers. The chances for injuries and penalties are completely random.

    General Tips

(The following was taken straight from the Wizards site.)

Here are some general tips for using the PlayGrid. Of key importance is keeping the card flat as it moves through the PlayGrid, and moving it through at an even speed. Try and match the speed that the arrows make on the PlayGrid display as you swipe the card through. If your card is a little bent, put it in a card protector or use a second card behind it to keep it flat as you swipe it, this works well if you're having difficulties with the foil player cards as well. Be sure to hold the PlayGrid in place, either by holding it down with your off hand while you swipe, or by picking up the PlayGrid and swiping the card through with the PlayGrid in your hand.

One of the most common questions about the PlayGrid is, "Can I use card protectors?" and the answer is yes, the PlayGrid was designed with card protectors in mind. One thing to keep in mind, however, is that you can not use the UV protected card sleeves, as they prevent the PlayGrid's laser from reading the card. Also, make sure the little foil logo on the card protector is not in front of the card's barcode.

Remember to blow the dust out from the reader area of the PlayGrid on occasion. Dust can accumulate in the PlayGrid's reader and make it difficult to get a good reading from a card. In addition, use quality batteries in your PlayGrid. A good set of Duracell or Energizer batteries can make your PlayGrid scan better and last longer.

    Test Mode

The PlayGrid has a built-in test mode you can use to practice swiping your cards (especially the more difficult ones, like foils). Follow the following steps to access the test mode. (Thanks to Oddball for initially getting the info.)

  • Press and hold down the (black) backup player button, then simultaneously press and hold down the (yellow) power button. Hold down both buttons for approximately five seconds, and "TEST" should appear on the screen.

  • Press the missing player button. The entire LCD screen will flash three times.

  • "M FREQ" will appear on the screen. Hit the missing player button.

  • "S FREQ" will appear on the screen. Hit the missing player button.

  • The PlayGrid will automatically display "M A075", then "D EB3D" (clicking the missing player button during both these tests may speed up the process).

  • Finally, you should come to a screen with the moving arrows prompting you to insert. Swipe a card through the machine; the PlayGrid will either respond with "GOOD" for a good swipe or "ERR" if otherwise.
